Abstract

Eun-kyung YiThis article is intended to investigate the so-called biblical concept ‘a corn of wheat’ in The Master and Margarita. Physical and spiritual death of main heroes in The Master and Margarita shows a Christian thought. The main message of this novel is focused on that bible phrase: a corn of wheat doesn’t fall into the ground nor die, it remains alone: but if it die, it brings forth much fruit. The novel starts from death of Verlioz and then the other characters get involved with this death. They became confused within their circumstances. All things of their lives are put at the boundary line, the authorities which are fallen down to collapse and then converted to Chaos. All things reach death, They immediately acquire new birth. Death of Verlioz and Ivan’s schizophrenia, the fire in Moscow are different, but they all mean symbolic death and inform that a new era has just started. The death of Verlioz means the start of new time. Ironically, if it dies, it has a possibility of re-birth. With the starting of his death, it appears that Moscow also has been resurrected. Ivan has two features simultaneously, that is, death and life. Bulgakov emphasizes the belief against resurrection through the figure of Ivan and it underlines the potentiality of the human being. The fire in Moscow means that not only the individual, but also the hour and the space have possibility for re-birth. The Master and Margarita shows the expectation toward future against Soviet Union by coexistence of death and life in human being, the time and the space.
