초록

This study is to discover William Blake's poetics of joy in his lyric and prophetic poetry, especially in Songs of Innocence, Songs of Experience, Visions of the Daughters of Albion(VDA), and The Marriage of Heaven and Hell. My interest focuses on Theotormon's questions, "Tell me what is a joy and in what gardens do joys grow" spoken in VDA. These questions suggest a way of existence where individual joy is fulfilled by an orientation towards the good. Unlike simple pleasure, joy is associated with cognitive evaluation and judgment about the good. Blake's poetry is to stimulate the reader's capacity of perception through the contents and forms of his poems. Blake employed the stylistic devices, pushing his poetic language toward the actual style of the bible, to gain the biblical authority. His biblical devices are parallelism and rhetorical questions, which are most apparent in VDA. Blake's final purpose is for the readers to recover the excess of their delights in their existence through the enjoyment of his poetry.
