W. B. Yeats takes an arguable stand between the Romantic and the Modern. The measure is usually his view of ‘personality’ and ‘impersonality,’ judged against T. S. Eliot’s impersonality thesis but both poets show a contradictory stance in this. The issue at stake is not the two terms or ideas typically posed against each other, but the artistic autonomy beyond such binary opposition, which Yeats strived all his life to attain—exactly what Eliot wants to reach with his impersonality thesis. This is why ‘the mythical method’—the ultimately modern method of depersonalization transcending personality and impersonality presented by Eliot—comes from Yeats before anyone else.
