Abstract

Whereas most criticism on Henry James has focused on the aspects of the author's style, "psychological realism," he was in fact deeply interested in the literary tenets and ideals of Romanticism. And his novels, hence, are colored conspicuously with Romantic qualities. James's search into human psychology is highly reminiscent of the emphasis of English Romantic poets on the human mind as essentially the reality perceiving quality. But, above all, Shelley's romantic "moralism" based on the empathic imagination and committed to the betterment of human society finds most distinct echoes in the major novels of James. James believed in the capacity of the human imagination as the source of comprehensive and creative transformation of the human condition into a more balanced and orderly ideality. In his later period novels, especially in The Golden Bowl, James's ideal for the improvement of human society is attested and realized through his protagonist, Maggie Verver, with considerable success. In The Golden Bowl, Maggie Verver, with her creative imagination, artistic will, and warm conscience which spring from the empathic resources of Romanticism, succeeds in regaining her husband's heart from his seducer, Charlotte Stant, who has been married to Maggie's father just for money. By so doing, Maggie achieves her own position as a restorer of the small community to which she belongs out of the danger of total collapse.
