Abstract

This study aims to analyze the meaning of liberty that is embodied in 6 pieces that depict lives of serf among 25 pieces that are included in A Sportsman’s Sketches of Ivan Sergeyevich Turgenev. Turgenev expanded his range of reasoning to life-related ontological topics from ‘the master and the slave’ after the death of Bellinskii and the failure of the French revolution in 1848. Therefore, his reasoning towards liberty went through certain changes. First of all, Turgenev contrasted two places of nature and civilization. True liberty comes from yearning and appreciating a comfortable life, that comes from liberation from all imprisonments of human civilization that binds down all ontological beings. The writer’s reasoning changed after 1848 due to the combination of issue with death and faith. It does not lie in a blind acceptance of faith. Rather, it lies in reasoning that allows one to think of positively their own faith and realization of God’s providence, like Luceria’s.
