Abstract

Wanliyehuobian [An Unofficial Records of Wanli Period], written by Shen Defu (1578-1642), is one of the most important records about the Ming Dynasty. Shen describes various aspects of the Ming Dynasty’s past, such as laws and regulations, people and events about which he had heard, in an biji [essay-style]. Obviously, Wanliyehuobian was not official history organized by the governmental institute. It has nevertheless been taken as valuable complementary source for the history of the Ming Dynasty, due to its broad coverage. Despite its potential, it has not substantially contributable to the understanding on social life of Ming Dynasty. Because it has not been translated and properly annotated in Korean and even in modern Chinese. We eventually aim at translating entire volume of Wanliyehuobian into Korean with full annotation. This paper could be the first step of the project. It translates four articles, based on the edition published in 2015, by Zhonghua Book Company: the preface of original work and introduction of sequel written by Shen Defu, and the preface and postscript of addendum by one of his descendants, Zhen Shen. Through this work we can outline the background information relevant to the book, such as authors’ purpose of writing, outline of the book, process of publication, and so on.
