Abstract
T. S. Eliot’s essay Tradition and Individual Talent (1917)has more than 9 Chinese translations, being translated in 1930－40s, retranslated in 196070s and 90s by both in mainland China and Taiwan. The essay has been cited, transformed, transplanted, interpreted and misread by a lot of translators, critics, scholars and writers. It has been promoted the construction of Chinese modern literature and poetics. This paper illustrates its translation and culture misreading in 20th century China by using Edward Said’s traveling theory and translation theory. It argues that the essay has provided a solution of the dilemma of modern Chinese literature and become one important part of Chinese literature tradition.
