Abstract

This study set out to shed light onto the social symbolism of 'Gamgok', a cultural space, through the life and literature of Chuisa Lee Yeo-bin, a literary figure that lived in the 16th and 17th century. The study made an inquiry into a cultural space created by the move of a cultural subject that experienced life at the center and was pushed out to the margin by political and social causes. Lee advocated Jeoneunseol and pointed out the injustice of popular opinions to dethrone Inmokdaebi and Yeongchang daegun by writing 'Cheongjeoneunso'. After his appeal was not accepted, he developed doubts about the state of affairs, built 'Gamho' in 'Gamgok', Yeongju, and lived in seclusion there. Places can be the subjects or supports of memories sometimes and offer memories that transcend human memories other times. Here images are used to create sensible inscriptions of certain knowledge content, and places are used to arrange and rediscover inscribed memories. The work of exploring the space of his literature that recorded and represented 'Gamgok' and 'Gamho', which Lee built after resigning from his govern ment office and came home, and its surrounding geography and further searching for the social symbolism of 'Gamgok' and 'Gamho' reproduced by his records and literature would help to find his thoughts and their signals and interpret their meanings. He fulfilled his dream of resigning from a government office and coming home, which was inspired by his complaints with the state of affairs, by investing his time and sweat in 'Gamho'. In other words, 'Gamgok' was a 'place for self-manifestation' where he was able to melt away his complaints and conflicts with the times and also an image space for a classical scholar dreaming of an ideal. He had doubts about the political situation during the reign of King Gwanghaegun, resigned from his government office, came home, and created literature, and those moves of his were the products of a man occupying a space and creating culture in the middle of social and geographical outcome and order.
