이 글은 『오디세이아』에서 오디세우스와 세이렌의 조우가 의미하는 바를 규명하려는 시도다. 그 시도는 두 가지 질문 즉 세이렌의 진정한 정체가 어떤 것인지 그리고 세이렌의 유혹에 대한 오디세우스의 대처 방식이 지닌 함축은 어떤 것인지에 대한 답을 모색하는 과제를 포함한다. 첫 번째 질문에 대하여 이 글은 세이렌이 사실은 『일리아스』적 영웅주의를 노래하는 여신 무사라는 해석을 답으로 제시한다. 두 번째 질문에 대한 답으로는 오디세우스의 대처가 『일리아스』의 영웅 세계를 현실의 세계가 아닌 문학의 세계에 위치시킴으로써 그 세계와 거리를 확보하는 방식으로 영웅주의를 극복하려는 방안이라는 해석을 제시한다.
Abstract
In this paper I inquire into the meaning of the encounter between Odysseus and Siren in Odyssey. The meaning of this encounter can be illuminated by answering the following two questions: the question of what the true identity of Siren is and the question of what the implication of metis applied by Odysseus to resist the seduction of Siren. The answer to the first question consists in revealing Siren as Muse singing about the iliadic heroism. The answer to the second question consists in the interpretation that the aim of Odysseus’ metis is to keep a safe distance from the world of heroism without denying any value to it; this is achieved by relegating the iliadic heroism to the fictive world of literature.
