초록

Antigone in isolation and desperation resorts to the use of the dialectical reasoning to justify again her deed. In doing so, she specified the original universal version of the nomos of philia, i.e. the unwritten divine laws, which she had heroically announced in deep religious feeling before Kreon. But this does not mean that she has renounced her past deed of giving a burial to her dead brother. But she begins to see her deed from a different perspective, for she believed that her deed has found no response with the citizens, and, by contrast, that Kreon’s edict has found positive one and thus has a legitimate claim. Her changed attitude arises especially from the chorus’ severe criticisms against her deed (Ant.853-6, 872-5). The most striking example of her changed attitude is that she repeats literally Ismene’s words “in defiance of the citizens”(79). All of this points to the fact that the verses 904-920 are genuine. The fact, furthermore, makes it clear that the creating of tension (Spannung) and its balancing build the core of Sophocles’ tragic. On characterisation level, the tension between different perspectives (e.g. the nomos of philia and the nomos of the city) will be internalised in Antigone’s consciousness and further heightened by her heroic act of self-assertion, i.e. suicide. On thematic level, similarly, the tension will be created recurrently and thus intensified through the overall structure of the Antigone e.g. between the nomos of philia and the nomos of the city, between one’s piety toward the gods and one’s duty to respect the King’s power, one’s pious action and its result of impiety, etc.
