Abstract
‘Okjeon’ rye (Secale cereale L.) was developed by the National Crop Experiment Station (NCES). It was released in 2001 because of its excellent earliness and yield potential. ‘Okjeon’ was developed from an open pollination with 20 rye lines in 1984. Subsequent generation were handled in a recurrent and mass selection program. ‘SR94-E-E-H-H-85-E’ was selected for earliness and agronomic appearance in 1994 and placed in preliminary yield trial. In 1997, it was designated ‘Homil 24’ and placed in regional yield trials. Over 3 years, ‘Okjeon’ averaged 9.09 ton ha1 of forage yield (based on dry matter) harvested at April 30 and was superior to other varieties with an increase of 16% more than ‘Paldang’ and 10% more than 'Koolgrazer'. Heading date of ‘Okjeon’ was April 25 which was 4 days earlier than that of 'Paldang' and was 7 days earlier than that of 'Koolgrazer'. It would be recommended as a winter crop producing forage before planting rice or maize in South Korea.
