Abstract
A new soy sauce and soy paste soybean cultivar, Hojang was developed from the cross between HS12 (Jangyeobkong/Hwangkeumkong) and Suwon153 by the soybean breeding laboratory of the National Honam Agricultural Experiment Station (NHAES) in 2002. The preliminary, advanced, and regional yield trials for evaluation and selection were carried out from 1998 to 2002. Hojang had a determinate growth habit, white flower, grayish brown pubescence, yellow seed coat, yellow hilum, and oval leaf shape. The maturity date of Hojang is six days earlier than the check variety, Taekwangkong. It was characterized with good seed quality for producing tofu, medium to large 100-seed weight (23.4 g), and resistance to lodging. It has also been identified to have resistance to soybean mosaic and necrotic symptom of soybean mosaic virus that are the troublesome soybean disease. The average yield of Hojang in the regional yield trials for double cropping for three years (2000-2002) was 2.47 ton per hectare, which was 2 percent higher than the check variety, Taekwangkong.
