Abstract
This study was carried out to characterize quantitative trait loci (QTL) related with low temperature germination and emergence in rice. A recombinant inbred line (RILs) population was developed from a cross between a cold-susceptible Tongil-type rice variety, Milyang23, and a cold-tolerant japonica rice variety, Stejaree45 by single seed descent method. The 175 RILs (F8) were evaluated for low temperature germination (13oC) and emergence (15oC). Frequency distribution of RILs for low temperature germination and emergence showed nearly normal distribution suggesting the quantitative nature and analyzed for the polymorphism of SSR markers. A molecular linkage map consisting of 93 SSR markers was constructed to identify QTLs associated with QTL and emergence. The map coverage was 1,293 cM in length with an average interval of 14.4 cM between markers. One QTL for germination at low temperature flanked by two SSR markers RM254 and RM206 on chromosome 11 was detected and this QTL explained 12.5% of the total phenotypic variation. QTL for emergence at low-temperature was not detected. The markers linked to low temperature germination would be useful in selecting for lines with enhanced low temperature germination in a breeding program.
