A New Black Seed Coat Soybean Variety with Large Seed Size and Good Seed Quality “Geumjeongkong 4”

Abstract

A new black seed coat soybean variety, Geumjeongkong 4 was developed at the National Yeongnam AgriculturalExperiment Station in 2001. Geumjeongkong 4 was selected from a cros Paldalkong/YCS87-3/YCS87-3. The preliminary,advanced and regional yield trials for evaluation and selection of this variety were carried out from 1997 to 2001. It has deter-minate growth habit, purple flower, brown pubescence, brown pod color, black seed coat, yellow cotyledon, spherical seed shape,ovoid leaf shape and large seed size (28.0 grams per 100 seeds), and maturity was similar to the check variety Geumjeongkong 1.In oiligo-saccharide content (9.46%) and anthocyanin contents of seed coats (8.42 mg/1 g), Geumjeongkong 4 was higher thancheck variety, and it has good adaptability for cooking with rice. It also has been identified to have resistance to necrotic symptomof soybean mosaic virus which are the troublesome soybean diseases. The average yield of Geumjeongkong 4 was 2.38 ton perhectare in the regional yield trials at six locations of Korea from 1999 to 2001 which was 4 percent higher than the check varietyGeumjeongkong 1.
