Abstract
A new pink gerbera (Gerbera hybrida Hort.) cultivar Smart was developed from a cross between Beauty and Ansofie followed by seedling and line selections at the Flower Breeding Research Institute, Gyeongnam Agricultural Research and Extention Services (ARES) in 1998. Characteristic trials were conducted three times from 1999 to 2001. Newly bred Smart showed pink color (RHS No. 23-D), brown center, single type, and large flower. It also was in good harmony in ray floret color and flower center color with stable flower shape, and vase life was 11.8days. The average yield of Smart was 49.5 flowers per plant per year in the greenhouse yield trails carried out from 1999 to 2001. This cultivar registered for commercialization in 2002. Smart would be cultured under greenhouse condition in Korea.
