한국 출판물 장정의 미적 표현과 가치에 관한 연구-근대 이전 출판물을 중심으로

Abstract

This study shows that Korea's binding of books handed down from old times does not only plays an important role as a medium of information and knowledge but also has its own formative significance as a mental cultural heritage. It aims at enhancing an aesthetic value of traditional books on the basis of the design of binding and also showing a basic method of researches in binding. Research in binding is defined as a science of examining, analyzing, criticizing and studying the style, arrangement, or appearance of letters on books, the contents of the text as an intellectual product, and a physical form containing them. Previous studies are divided into three areas: 1) of comparing and contrasting the same kinds of several books and correcting errors, 2) of describing contents as an intellectual product, and 3) of describing a physical form of books. Most of the researches, however, put emphasis on describing differences of printing and general characteristics of books from the viewpoint of printing and bibliography, not from the aesthetic viewpoint, according to periodization. It may be true that they have made great efforts to reevaluate the beauty of Korea concerning pictures, potteries, structures, crafted products, relics, etc., from the variety of viewpoints, but they have not made a profound and exhaustive study of the publications applying aesthetic standard based on Korean traditional values. In future, aesthetic approach of books needs to collect good results of previous studies rooted in the aesthetic sense of Korean culture and develop frameworks of “researches in expression and organization of binding of old books” One of specific research methods is by discovering and examining a cultural heritage for publications on the basis of their physical forms and by grasping the whole picture of a publication culture, according to periodization. In addition, an effect of cultural/historical background of publication and Korean unique aesthetic sense on elements for binding of books should be examined. As a result, we could expect good results of a variety of follow-up researches which will reestablish aesthetic significance of binding in Korean publication culture. I expect that this study will contribute to the establishment of an aesthetic standard of binding concerning “beautiful books”, the image enhancement of publication, and a mass publication and a cultural communication
