Abstract
The study aims to seek, among the social characteristics of the producers, the reason why pro-environmental agriculture rapidly gaining momentum nowadays have not grown into an alternative agricultural paradigm. A survey was administered to the 199 member producers of the 'Poolmu Life Cooperative', the only producers' life cooperative in the nation. The survey shows that their socio-economic characteristics, unlike foreign farmers specialized in organic agriculture and domestic producers with well-defined organizations, are quite similar to those of the conventional farmers. This is the weak point of the Poolmu Life Cooperative. But they, being relatively young, well-educated, and affluent, turn out to be more movement-oriented and to have stronger ideological motivations than almost all other pro-environmental producers among the nation. This opens the possibility for the Poolmu Life Cooperative to spearhead the movement of alternative agriculture. Implications of the study are as follows. First, producers have to be organized. Second, a bulwark of consumer support is needed, which could protect ideals and faiths of the producers. Third, governmental policies, which have been productivity-oriented, now have to be changed into those focusing on social relations. With these conditions being met, pro-environmental agriculture could be grown into a full-fledged paradigm for alternative agriculture.
