Abstract

The characteristics of fractures in high-level radioactive waste disposal sites are crucial not only for the stability of disposal facilities but also for identifying potential pathways for leaked radionuclide. Therefore, investigation and analysis of these fractures are essential. Considering the complex and diverse rock types of Korea's geological environment, as well as the depth of approximately 500 meters at which the disposal facilities will be constructed, it is important to understand fracture characteristics both in shallow and deep formations. In this study, we focused on the fracture characteristics of four rock types—granite, sedimentary rock, gneiss, and volcanic rock—commonly found in Korea and considered as candidate host rocks for disposal site. These fracture data were obtained from 750-meter-deep boreholes. The study sites were selected based on Korea's tectonic regimes. Given the challenges of selecting drilling sites for such investigations, the strategy employed to decide suitable drilling locations is also introduced. Fracture information was obtained through core logging and televiewer. The analysis revealed that in granite, high-angle fracture sets were predominant, whereas in sedimentary rock, most fractures were low-angle and appeared to be related to bedding. In gneiss, medium- to low-angle fractures were dominant, exhibiting inclinations similar to foliation. Volcanic rock displayed a mixed pattern, with low-angle fractures parallel to flow structures or bedding in some areas, while high-angle fractures were also observed in the other. Further- more, discrepancies were found between geological surveys and lineament data obtained from surface investigations and those from deep boreholes. This indicates that conducting deep borehole investigations is indispensable for selecting suitable sites for high-level radio- active waste disposal.
