Abstract
This study evaluates the hydraulic conductivity and distribution patterns of the Excavation Disturbed Zone (EDZ) near a tunnel in a domestic Underground Research Laboratory located within fractured rock. A high-precision hydraulic testing system, developed in-house, was applied to horizontal boreholes drilled inside the rock tunnel, and constant pressure injection tests were conducted to obtain in situ pressure and flow rate data. Using both steady-state and transient flow analyses, hydraulic conductivities were derived as a function of depth (i.e., distance from the tunnel wall). The results showed that in the BBH-1 borehole, hydraulic conductivity decreased by approximately one order of magnitude with increasing distance from the tunnel wall, consistent with trends reported in previous studies on EDZ permeability. However, in the BBH-2 borehole, locally high permeability values were observed at specific depths, deviating from the overall trend of decreasing permeability with distance from the wall. These findings suggest that the hydraulic properties of rock surrounding excavation spaces may not always follow uniform reduction trends, highlighting the importance of performing in-situ hydraulic tests to directly assess the hydraulic characteristics of near-field zones. The testing equipment, methodologies, and analytical processes used in this study, as well as the derived permeability results, provide a foundation for developing an integrated system for detailed hydraulic evaluation of the EDZ around underground structures.
