Abstract

This study is a case study that analyzes the treatment of a woman in her 30s who has recovered from attachment trauma using Guided Imagery and Music (GIM). The purpose of this study is to analyze the recovery process by focusing on two research questions: the therapeutic role of GIM techniques and when and how the three levels of GIM were used in the patient’s recovery process. As a result, first, GIM helped build a stable foundation by restoring a healthy attachment relationship and was used as a means to access the core memories of trauma, providing an opportunity to explore and witness the wounded inner world. In addition, it played a therapeutic role in achieving inner growth through the process of reorganizing traumatic events and integrating them with their current lives to understand and accept themselves. Second, GIM was applied by varying the level of the application according to the client's internal readiness and purpose. Supportive music and imagery were mainly used in the early stages to confirm safety and internal resources and were used for client stabilization at all stages when necessary. Re-educative music and imagery were mainly used at the stage of working at the core of the trauma and provided an opportunity to help self-understanding and self-acceptance through a contextual understanding of traumatic experiences. Re-constructive music and imagery are used in the post- traumatic growth stage to understand the traumatic memory in context and to achieve the unity of life through the experience of being free from the traumatic memory and reconstructing the perception of self.
