초록
The rise of Neo-Confucianism in the Song dynasty presented new challenges for Buddhism in China. In this presentation, I discuss the model proposed by the Buddhist historian and literatus Zanning 贊寧 (919-1001) for the integration of Buddhism into the Confucian secular state in terms of realpolitik 現實政治, contrasting it with the traditional Buddhist model of a Dharma-Wheel turning monarch, the cakravartin 轉法輪王. The presentation is framed within larger concerns relating to the integration and accommodation of Buddhism into a Confucian state, and its implications for contemporary China.
