체육분야에서 변인 간 인과관계 연구에 관심을 갖는 연구자들은 두 변인의 관계가 어떤 제3의 변인의 조건(예; 집단, 강도 등)에 따라 변화하는 것에도 많은 관심을 갖게 된다. 이러한 경우처럼 독립변인이 종속변인에 미치는 효과가 제3의 변인의 수준이나 값에 따라 달라질 때 그 제3의 변인을 중재변인(moderator variable)이라 한다. 만약, 연구자가 중재변인의 효과에 관심을 갖고, 변인 간 인과관계에서 중재효과가 존재한다는 이론적인 근거가 있다면 중재변인의 효과를 검증해야 할 것이다. 하지만, 국내 체육분야의 사회과학 연구에서는 변인 간 인과관계에서 중재변인의 효과를 검증한 사례가 거의 없다. 이러한 이유는 변인 간 인과관계에서 존재하는 중재변인의 의미와 중재변인의 효과를 검증하는 방법에 대한 안내가 부족했기 때문일 것이다. 이에 본 연구에서는 변인 간 인과관계에서 중재변인의 의미와 중재변인의 효과를 검증하는 방법에 대해 구체적으로 소개하고, 실제 연구에서 사용했던 자료로 중재효과를 검증하는 예를 제시하였다. 두 변인 간 관계에서 중재변인이 존재할 때 중재변인의 효과를 검증하는 방법은 독립변인과 중재변인의 척도(scale)에 따라 달라진다. 일반적으로 독립변인과 중재변인이 모두 범주변인인 실험 연구에서는 주로 분산분석(ANOVA)을 통해서 중재효과가 검증되지만, 사회과학 분야의 인과관계 연구에서는 독립변인이 연속변인일 경우가 많아 회귀분석을 이용하여 중재효과를 주로 검증한다. 최근 체육분야의 인과관계 연구에서 자주 나타나는 둘 이상의 측정변인으로 구성된 잠재변인 간 관계에서 중재변인의 효과를 검증하기 위해서는 구조방정식모형(SEM)을 활용하는 것이 바람직하다. 따라서, 본 연구에서는 회귀분석과 SEM을 이용하여 실제 자료에서 나타나는 중재효과 검증의 구체적인 절차를 소개하였다.
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to present the methods and procedure of examining moderator variable effect. A moderator variable is a variable which affects the direction and/or strength of the relationship between an independent variable and a dependent variable. Regression, and SEM have been used to examine the effect of moderator variable in social science. Regression analysis has limitations in that it does not take account the measurement error and does not include analysis of the relationship between latent variables that frequently appear in cause-effect study. The application of structural equation model(SEM) let us overcome these limitations. The methods and procedure of applying regression model and SEM in examining moderator variable effect are described and compared in this paper along with examples.
