본 연구는 한국 종교문화사에 대한 이해를 가지고 특히 미주 한인 여성리더들의 리더십에 있어서 어떻게 유교 전통과 기독교가 서로 영향을 끼치면서 작용하였는지를 살펴보는 것이다. 미주 한인 여성들의 리더십이란 지금까지의 전통적인 아시아적 영성을 바탕으로 해서 서구적 가치관을 가장 첨예하게 선두에서 실천하고 있는 그룹으로 볼 수 있다. 주지하다시피 유교 전통 속에서 살아온 한국 여성들은 19세기 말과 20세기에 걸쳐서 기독교를 받아들이게 되었고, 그것을 통하여 오랜 유교 전통의 가부장주의에서 벗어나 괄목할 만한 리더십으로 성장할 수 있었다. 그리하여 통상적으로 오늘날 한국 여성들의 변화와 성장은 모두 근대 서구 기독교의 영향으로만 여겨지고 있으나, 본 연구는 그러한 표면적 평가를 넘어서 보다 다면적이고 심층적으로 유교와 기독교의 상호역할과 영향을 살펴보려는 것이다. 유교와 기독교의 만남으로부터 얻어진 리더십은 공적인 영역과 사적인 영역을 통합해서 모두 성스러운 영역으로 화하게 하고자 하는(禮化) ‘세간적’(世間的) 또는 ‘세속적’(secular) 종교성의 리더십을 말하며, 가정적 가치와 사회적 실천을 함께 중시여기는 리더십으로, 이것을 한국 여성리더들이 잘 체현하고 있다는 것이다. 이러한 한국 여성리더십의 고유한 특성에 대한 연구는 단지 한국 여성들의 리더십 향상만을 위한 것이 아니다. 오늘날 중국과 미국으로 대표되는 동서양 두 문명의 만남이 인류 모두를 위해서 더욱 중요한 화두로 떠오르고 있는 때이므로 한국 사회에서 특히 여성들이 초창기에 어떠한 유교적 바탕에서 기독교를 받아들였고, 그 후 그 열매가 어떠한지를 살펴보는 일은 좋은 선례가 될 것이라고 여기는 바이다.
Abstract
I think Korea's recent achievements in many areas are remarkable, there are several different reason for that to have been possible, but I would like to give a good account of them by saying that Korean women have played a very important role, and their spiritual power has been formed out of multidimensional sources. This study is to explore how Confucian tradition and Christianity together have influenced Korean women in forming their modern leadership. Korean Confucian women's lives have been changed by the introduction of Christian gospel, and this encounter has caused in time certain developments with its positive and negative impacts on Korean women's lives. It is mainly an exploration of an alternative Confucian-Christian leadership for our postmodern world in the 21st century, which I think we can find from the dialogue between the two traditions. Today the encounter between Confucianism and Christianity has become especially important as the intellectual ground for the positive relationship between China and the United States of America, on which the future of humankind will be dependent to a great extent. So I think that this study on their encounter in the life of Korean women will be very helpful to understand how these two civilizations can work together for the future of humankind. I doing this, I will show some successful contemporary Korean-American women as insightful examples of the encounter of these tow cultures, these women are now usually Christian, but came from good Confucian families. In my view, we can observe in them the embodiment of the basic Confucian and Christian values being harmoniously cooperated and productively correlated. They are successful not only in their family lives but also in their public roles. I have conducted interviews as the concrete sources of my study with several Korean women leaders living in the United States. As developed feature of the encounter between the two traditions they will give us invaluable insights into an alternative leadership in the 21st century.
