Abstract
This study concentrates on a case of the Korean migrants as tourism agents in Angkor Park, Siem Reap, Cambodia. It presents how Korean package tour works, especially in Southeast Asia and how Korean migrants move to serve tourists in the region. It explains the characteristics of migrants who particularly move to tourism destination to work. These Korean migrants have transnational network between tourist society and tourism destination. They are directly connected and affected by the trend of the Korean tourism market. Korean way of business is unique comparing to other foreign travel agencies in Siem Reap. Travel agencies in tourism destination even do not get the price for the service they provide for. The Korean travel agencies in Siem Reap inevitably have to make a profit from alternative way such as option tour and shopping commission. Since most of migrants are working in Korean tourism business, owners of restaurants and shops are subordinated to guides and travel agencies. This hierarchy in tourism destination comes from the hierarchy between the tour company in Korea and the local branch of Korean travel agencies in Cambodia. Meantime, Korean migrants exist as 'enclave' in Siem Reap. Neither they do not assimilate to the local culture nor they do not affect or change local culture generally considered. Korean migrants are related to Korean market and stick on to their Korean bond. And also Korean migrants prevent local people from learning Korean language while repelling them working as a tour guide due to lack of their language competency. It causes conflicts and competition to achieve and maintain the position of 'host' between Korean migrants and local people. This study proves tourism is the one of the important factor that we should concern the relationship Korea and Southeast Asia, since Korean tourists are going to the region and it is forcing Korean tourism agencies to move. Furthermore this explanation of tourism migrants can contribute to suggest one of the patterns of Korean migrants in Southeast Asia.
