Abstract

Social responsibility is an important issue for all companies. However, 'social responsibility' has more significance for food companies that produce food for human consumption. Food has a characteristic that directly affects the human body. The CSR of a food company is a necessary and sufficient condition for sustainable development of a corporation beyond merely ethical and legal aspects. Agri-food companies therefore need to review more closely about the social responsibilities of agri-food supply chain. This study devised social responsibility indicators of food companies as an index for food companies, agriculture, rural people, and consumers to build trustworthy society. We redesigned the indicators by combining social responsibility elements of companies developed by international organizations such as UN Global Compact, GRI and OECD, and social responsibility elements of food industry defined by Maloni et al. (2006). The validity of the indicators was verified through Delphi technique. Through this process, the indicators were determined and then hierarchical analysis was conducted to derive the weights. The analysis shows that food safety is one of the most important social responsibilities that food companies must obey. Therefore, large food corporations must take the lead in social responsibility management and ethical expansion.
