Abstract

This study is designed to analyze and appraise the perceived importance of various competence factors by Korean cabin crews in foreign airlines and their efforts to develop and utilize such abilities at work. To that end, this study used 49 general categories of competence traits and narrowed the categories down to 6 specific criteria such as basic traits, professional traits, self-concept, human-relation ability, situation settlement ability, and professional knowledge & skills. Then through Importance Performance Analysis (IPA), each subject s perceived importance of those competence factors in the workplace were measured. As a result of the IPA and also interviewing with specialists who are competency counselors, clear distinctions were made between able-to-nurture competence factors and unable-to-nurture ones. On this basis, suggestions can be made that able-to-nurture competence factors need to be trained and developed further through competence-based education programs after recruitment, while unable-to-nurture factors should be taken into consideration during recruitment processes.
