Abstract
This paper investigates the determinants of the service-sector share of employment in Korea. Based on regional dynamic panel data analyses for the period from 2000 to 2016, we show that the productivity gap between manufacturing and services is the most important factor for the rise of service employment in Korea. In contrast, per capita income is found to have no significant influence on the share of service employment. Our results also show that while government expenditures on education and social welfare services have a positive and significant impact on the employment share of most sub-sectors in services, a higher rate of female labor market participation and the ageing of population are not significant determinants of the service employment share.
