This study has been undertaken to probe the reasons that Bang Ungmo, the third owner of Chosun Ilbo had bought out the biggest newspaper in Colonial Chosun. Bang had been well known as one of the wealthiest businessmen at that time who primarily accumulated unimaginably huge wealth by discovering very profitable gold mines in northwestern Korea in the 1920s. And it was very uncommon at that time for vulgar capitalists like Bang Ungmo to acquire a newspaper company which was notorious for unprofitability. By examining related literatures, we come to the following conclusions;1. There is a possibility that Bang Ungmo acquired Chosun Ilbo because of the potential profitability accrued by newspaper business. 2. Bang Ungmo may have desired to become an influential figure in terms of political power to overcome his inferior background arising from the fact that he was the very millionaire who accumulated great wealth from the windfall gold-mine bonanza.
