Abstract

A byeongnok (病錄, “medical record”) refers to a document in which a patient recorded the state of illness in order to request treatment from a physician. Compared with diaries, byeongnok allow for a more detailed examination of medical conditions and therapeutic practices. Furthermore, unlike uian (醫案), which have recently attracted scholarly attention as records authored by physicians, byeongnok preserve the patient’s own voice. From the perspective that medical practice was not a unilateral process imposed by the physician upon the patient but rather a reciprocal relationship of mutual influence, byeongnok may be regarded as the only extant source that conveys the patient-centered dimension of medical encounters and must therefore be accorded serious consideration. This study examines four byeongnok preserved in the Cheonsanggakpa collection, among more than thirty examples included in the Collected Old Documents (Gomunseo Jipseong). These records provide valuable insights into the illnesses and treatments experienced by the family of Kim Seong-tak (金聖鐸), a member of the Andong literati in the eighteenth century. In addition to these byeongnok, Kim left behind a personal diary, and his various writings were later compiled into the Collected Works of Master Jesan (Jesanseonsaeng Munjip). Of particular note is his deep engagement with issues of illness and medicine. His diaries, such as the Jibirok and the Gyeongsin Dongji Ilsigi, contain extensive entries, reflecting both his responsibilities as head of the household and his intellectual curiosity. As this orientation was shared by his sons, the byeongnok of the Kim family were able to be transmitted and preserved to the present day. Kim’s life can be broadly divided into two periods: his residence in Andong and his subsequent exile. During his years in Andong, he displayed a tendency to depend upon physicians rather than to engage in direct self-treatment. Although the options were limited, he was able to make use of dispensaries operated by local government offices. By contrast, in the vicinity of Gwangyang, where he was exiled, such institutional traces are difficult to identify. Nevertheless, by the mid-eighteenth century, private pharmacies were operating both in Andong and in Gwangyang, thereby enabling relatively free access to medicines through the purchase of required ingredients. Even so, encountering a physician capable of providing an accurate diagnosis and prescribing appropriate treatment remained difficult. Particularly noteworthy are the byeongnok from the year preceding his death, which reveal that Kim, despite his exile, was nevertheless able to consult physicians from various regions. He continued to request medical consultations from practitioners in places such as Hwagae and Gonyang, beyond Gwangyang itself. This was possible precisely because he prepared and transmitted detailed byeongnok—the kind of documents examined in this study—to the physicians.
