Memory allocation, which determines where memories are storedin specific neurons or synapses, has consistently been demonstratedto occur via specific mechanisms. Neuronal allocationstudies have focused on the activated population of neuronsand have shown that increased excitability via cAMP responseelement-binding protein (CREB) induces a bias toward memoryencodingneurons. Synaptic allocation suggests that synaptictagging enables memory to be mediated through different synapticstrengthening mechanisms, even within a single neuron. In this review, we summarize the fundamental concepts of memoryallocation at the neuronal and synaptic levels and discusstheir potential interrelationships.
