Abstract

This study investigates the impact of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) management on earnings management, and further examines whether audit fees moderate this relationship. Using a sample of Korean listed firms from 2018 to 2022, discretionary accruals are measured via the Modified Jones Model, and ESG scores are obtained from the Korea Corporate Governance Service. The empirical findings indicate that: (1) firms with higher ESG performance exhibit lower levels of earnings management; (2) ESG performance is positively associated with audit fees; and (3) the interaction between ESG and audit fees has a significant negative effect on earnings management, suggesting a mitigating moderating role of audit fees. These results imply that ESG engagement enhances accounting transparency and that audit quality, proxied by audit fees, plays a critical role in the ESG–earnings management nexus.
