Abstract

This paper, which uses the philosophy of Giorgio Agamben to discuss liberal arts education in the post-‘humanities’ generation, revisits the concepts of liberal arts, humanities, and humanism and analyzes how they relate to modernity. In particular, it critically examines the category of 'human' in the humanities and humanism through Agamben’s philosophy of life, and deepens the discussion of human identity and boundaries in the posthumanist generation. Agamben points out that the concept of ‘human’ and its boundaries, which originated in Renaissance humanism at the beginning of modernity, were actually very vague and relative. To illustrate this, Agamben introduces the concept of the ‘anthropological machine’ and reinterprets the narrative of Pinocchio as its symbol. He argues that the definitions of ‘human’ that we have constructed through language have shunned the mystery of actual human existence, and proposes an impossible reading and writing, an impossible writing and reading that does not attempt to define the human.
