Abstract

This study analyses the main characters of the Netflix series <Daily Dose of Sunshine> using a ‘Tri-Origin Character Theory’. Syd Field’s paradigm is the foundation for the overall structure of the story, which is divided into three acts. Act I, termed ‘Daily Life’; Act II-1 and Act II-2, termed ‘Attempted Change’; and Act III, termed ‘Mature Completion’. Next, a full-scale character analysis using the Tri-origin Theory is attempted.Characters are assigned to roles corresponding to Hetero (Initiator) for forces that drive change, Homo (Responder) for forces that resist change, Neutro (Completor) for forces that enable existence, and Neuto (Enlightener) for the spirit of existence. A character triangle is then diagrammed in accordance with the three-act structure. The findings from this analysis are summarized as follows. Jung Da-eun, a character who embodies the diverse experiences within the series, transforms from a kind nurse to a competent one, then to a frustrated nurse, and finally to a hopeful one. Confronting the ‘human group within society and the hospital environment’ (Hetero: Initiator), she grows from a ‘problematic patient’ (Homo: Responder) to a ‘person with an established self-identity’ (Neutro: Completor). This transformation was onlypossible after redefining the ‘erroneous Neuto’ of institutions, embedded in a collective identity of standardization, into the ‘correct Neuto’ (meaning Enlightener) representing human dignity. As a result, both the patients and Jung Da-eun transform into characters who acquire the ultimate values of hope, humanization, and human liberation (Neutro: Completor), metaphorically represented as ‘morning’ in the series title. The series’ core proposition, “We are all borderlanders on the boundary between normal and abnormal,” prompts a question about what true empathy entails. Furthermore, the series encourages us to reflect on whether we are immersed in collective identity, and if, by detaching from the power inherent in our external identity, we might also be complicit in structural oppression and discrimination. It is worth noting that the series has successfully and to a certain degree actualized these themes in its overall quality and viewership ratings. This paper offers a detailed analysis and presentation of the entire narrative progression of <Daily Dose of Sunshine>, using the Tri-origin Character Theory to examine the main characters’ transformations. We hope that the ‘Tri-origin Character Theory’ can contribute to the field of character theory, which is currently in a state of arrested development.
