Abstract
To investigate the effects of light length on the growth and development of plants, physiological parameters including plant growth, chlorophyll content, chlorophyll fluorescence and spectral reflectance were analyzed in 13 plant species growing in different light length conditions. In lab experiments using Arabidopsis thaliana (Columbia), plants grown under 24h light showed higher plant growth and chlorophyll fluorescence, lower spectral reflectance at 500-600 nm wavelengths and earlier flowering compared to the 12h light plants. In field experiments, Zelkova serrata, Erigeron annuus, Galinsoga ciliata, Rhododendron schlippenbachii, Rosa L., Pyracantha angusifolia, Oxalis corniculata, Trifolium repens, Agropyron ciliare, Prunus serrulata, Prunus serrulata and Nandina domestica growing under streetlights and no streetlights were analyzed and showed a difference in chlorophyll content, chlorophyll fluorescence and spectral reflectance according to species and growth stage. The results indicate that 24h light enhances plant growth and shortens the flowering time in laboratory settings, and streetlights influence the physiological parameters of plants and the effects depending on the species in field experiments.
