초록
This paper addresseswhat kinds of insights the cross-population (child L1-adult L2) and within-population (two adultL2 groups) comparison can bring to us.The language property that it focuses on is the Incompleteness Effect, which refers to the compatibility of partial completion interpretations of accomplishmentswhich typically entail full event completion. This phenomenon is attested inKorean but not inEnglish.Given such a divergence between the two, realizing the compatibility of partial completion interpretations of accomplishments in Korean can be a challenging task to both Korean children and adult English-speaking learners of Korean and realizing the incompatibility of partial completion interpretations of accomplishments in English to adult Korean-speaking learners of English. This paper examined how adult L2 and child L1 acquirers would face this task. This study found that both child L1 and adult L2 acquirers (adult native English speakers) exhibited the same patterns, which seems to suggest that both are guided by the same learning principles, the Subset Principle. However, the within-population comparison data (adult Korean and English speakers), coupled with the aforementioned cross-population comparison data, revealed that all in all, the adult L2 datawere uniformly accounted for by the L1 transfer.
