Abstract
This study analyzes a case in which a scenario-based chatbot was implemented using Dialogflow and applied in a liberal arts Korean class to improve the speaking skills required for university life among beginner–intermediate international undergraduates. To develop the chatbot, seven university-life Korean textbooks were reviewed, from which five core themes were extracted: student ID issuance, course registration, library use, club activities, and general campus life. Each theme was designed to enable gradual speaking practice through a structured progression. Speech logs from 29 beginner-level international undergraduates who participated in the class were analyzed using the CAF (Complexity, Accuracy, Fluency) framework. As tasks accumulated, students showed consistent improvement in average utterance length, lexical diversity, and overall speech quantity. Error patterns also shifted qualitatively—from basic grammatical errors to errors involving complex sentence construction—indicating progressive development in learners’ communicative competence. Furthermore, survey responses and open-ended feedback revealed that learners perceived the chatbot as helpful for increasing speaking opportunities, checking pronunciation, and enhancing learning motivation. However, the findings also highlight the need for technological and pedagogical improvements, such as higher speech recognition accuracy, more flexible dialogue flows, and stronger automated feedback capabilities. Future research should explore expanding scenario coverage based on learner speech data and refining feedback algorithms to further enhance learning outcomes.
