초록

Biomass has been used for energy sources from prehistoric times. Solid biofuels, such as bio-chips or bio-pellet are usedfor heating or electricity generation. Liquid biofuels, such as biodiesel and bioethanol from sugars or lignocellulosics, are well knownrenewable transportation fuels. Biogas produced from organic waste is also used for heating, generation, and vehicles. The geographicalpotential of biomass resources is defined as biomass resources available on account of geographical condition of a certain region. Onthe other hand, the technical potential of biomass resources can be defined as the amount of biomass resources usable for energysources using the latest biomass conversion technologies. The geographical and technical potentials of biomass resources arecalculated from previously estimated theoretical potentials of biomass resources using energy yield equations. The geographicalpotential of total biomass in Korea is estimated to be 19.121 MTOE/yr; 12.573 MTOE/yr of forest biomass, 4.019 MTOE/yr ofagricultural biomass, 1.455 MTOE/yr of livestock biomass, and 1.074 MTOE/yr of municipal solid waste biomass are availablegeographically. The technical potential of total biomass is estimated to be 15.639 MTOE/yr; 9.64 MTOE/yr of forest biomass, 4.019MTOE/yr of agricultural biomass, 1.124 MTOE/yr of livestock manure biomass and 0.856 MTOE/yr of municipal solid wastebiomass are available for technical conversion to produce energy sources.
