몸, 폭력, 그리고 꿈 ― 兩《唐書》〈列女傳〉의 재현 특징과 그 의미에 관한 분석

본고는 兩《唐書》의 〈列女傳〉을 대상으로 당 제국 시기에서 당송변혁기 사이 역동적으로 변화한 여성다움의 범주, 이를 표현한 서사와 재현 방식의 특징, 그리고 그 의미에 대해 탐색하였다. 《新唐書》는 초자연적 현상을 배격하고 유가적 이성주의를 편집 방침으로 삼았지만, 〈열녀전〉만큼은 경험적 상식에 부합하지 않는 꿈 이야기나 심지어 허구도 수용하면서 선악의 제시와 교훈의 생산에 보다 중점을 두었다. 역대 정사 열녀전에는 ‘복수하는 효녀’ 이야기가 지속적으로 수록되어 왔는데, 이 주제는 전통적으로 혈족을 우위로 두는 여성들의 가족의식과 俠의 정신을 반영해 왔으나 《新唐書ㆍ列女傳》에 수록된 謝小娥의 전기는 보다 복잡해진 당시 여성들의 법률적, 사회적, 정서적 정체성을 표현하고 있다. 또한 양《당서》〈列女傳〉에 표현된 잔인한 신체 훼손 장면은 널리 퍼진 불교 수행과 이민족의 관습이 유가 윤리와 결합한 당 제국 시기 세계주의의 반영이라 할 수 있다. 양《당서》 〈列女傳〉은 여성에게 특화된 고유한 재현체계, 그리고 성별을 기준으로 각기 다른 해석망이나 기대 지평을 작동시킨 역사 담론의 ‘성별화’가 존재했는지를 가늠할 수 있는 하나의 사례이다.
Abstract
This paper explores the changing categories of femininity during the Tang Empire and theTang-Song transition period, focusing on the Lienüzhuan (Biographies of Exemplary Women) in both Old Book of Tang and New Book of Tang. New Book of Tang rejects supernatural phenomena and adheres to a Confucian rationalist editorial policy, but in the Lienüzhuan, it paradoxically accepts dream stories and even fictional accounts that do not align with empirical common sense, placing greater emphasis on the presentation of virtue and vice and the production of moral lessons. Successive dynastic histories have continually included the theme of ‘the filial daughter who takes revenge,' reflecting women’s familial relationships that traditionally prioritized their natal family and the spirit of chivalry at the time. However, the biography of Xie Xiao’e in New Book of Tang presents a more complex expression of women’s legal, social, and emotional identities. Additionally, the violent depictions of bodily mutilation in Lienüzhuan of both Tang histories can be seen as cosmopolitan reflections of the Tang Empire, where widespread Buddhist practices and the customs of foreign peoples merged with Confucian ethics. The Lienüzhuan in both Tang histories provides a case study for examining whether a gender-specific representational system existed, as well as thegendered discourse of history that operated with distinct interpretive frameworks and horizons of expectations based on gender.
