도암 이재의 성리설 연구 - 호락논쟁의 주요 쟁점을 중심으로 -

이 논문의 목적은 18세기 중반 기호 낙론계를 대표하는 도암 이재(陶菴 李縡, 1680~1746)의 성리설을 호락논쟁의 주요 쟁점에 주목하여 검토, 분석하는 것이다. 이재는 18세기 전반기 기호 낙론계를 대표하는 성리학자이다. 그는 『전서(全書)』 형태로 이이의 문집 간행을 주도했을 만큼 기호학계에서 매우 상징적인 인물이라 할 수 있다. 그리고 그는 한천정사(寒泉精舍)에서의 강학활동을 통해 낙론계 성리설을 계승, 확산시킴으로써 그의 문하에서 낙론계 정통 학맥이 계승되었다는 상징성도 지니고 있다. 아울러 호락논쟁이 본격화되는 시점에서 이재는 호론의 윤봉구, 채응상, 심조 등과 논쟁을 전개하여 낙론계 성리설의 여론을 대변한 인물이었다. 이재의 성리설에는 본연의 측면에서 기(氣)의 개입을 주장하는 호학의 입장을 비판한다. 이러한 연장선에서 이재는 만물이 근원적으로 ‘리’를 동일하게 부여받았다는 측면을 부각시키면서 기의 제한을 넘어선 ‘리’의 보편성을 확인하는 인물성동론을 주장한다. 미발 역시 기질적인 맥락에서 해명하려는 호학의 입장을 거부하고 인간이라면 누구나 동일한 마음 즉 본심이 있음을 전제한다. 그리고 그러한 마음을 보존하는 것이 곧 수양의 출발점이자 목표라고 주장한다. 이러한 이재의 입장은 호론과 대비되는 인물성동(人物性同), 미발심체선(未發心體善), 성범심동(性凡心同)을 공유한 것으로 호락논쟁에서 낙론의 입장을 충실하게 계승한 것이라 할 수 있다. 비록 그가 호론과의 논쟁에서 심‘기’와 일반적인 ‘기질’을 구별하지 않고 사용함으로서 오는 문제도 노출하지만 전체적인 그의 성리설을 통해 본다면 기질적 맥락에서 미발시 마음의 상태를 설정하지 않음을 알 수 있다. 따라서 이 논문은 호락논쟁이 본격화되는 시기에 낙론의 여론을 대변하고 주도했던 이재의 성리설을 호락논쟁의 주요 쟁점들을 중심으로 검토, 분석하여 낙학의 입장을 주로 호학의 이간을 중심으로 해명되었다는 한계점을 보완하고, 낙학파 성리학자인 이재를 통해 해명함으로써 낙학파 성리학자들을 호락논쟁의 주체로 복원시키는데 일조하고자 한다.
Abstract
The purposes of this study were to review and analyze the Nature and Principle theory of Doam Yi Jae that represented the Nakron circles in the middle 18th century with a focus on the main issues of the Horak Debate. Yi Jae was one of the great Neo-Confucian scholars that represented the Giho Nakron circles in the first half of the 18th century. He was such a symbolic figure that he took the initiative in the publication of YI i’s collection of works in the compendium form. He also has symbolism in the transmission of the Nakron’s legitimate academic genealogy under his teaching by inheriting and spreading the Nakron through his pursuit of study activities at Hanchun Jungsa. He particularly led the arguments with Yun Bong-gu, Chae Eung-sang, and Sim Jo of the Horon and took the lead in the public opinions of Nakron in a situation where the Horak Debate became a full-blown debate between different schools. He proposed his academic position opposite to that of Horon with regard to the main issues of the Horak Debate. In his theory of Nature and Principle, Yi Jae rejected the position of Ho School, which actively insists on the intervention of Ki in the aspect of true nature to check the substance of “nature” more clearly. On its extension, he criticized the position of Horak, who tried to explain the Weifa in the context of Ki, as well, and maintained that the preservation of the original mind should be the starting point and goal of cultivation based on a premise that all human beings universally have the same original mind. These academic positions of Yi Jae loyally reflect the positions of the Nak School in the Horak Debate. The present study supplemented previous studies that offered explanations about the positions of the Nak School with a focus on Yi Gan that was mainly active in the Ho School by examining Yi Jae’s theory of the Nature and Principle and elucidated the main issues of Horak Debate through him, trying to restore the Nak School scholars as the subjects of the debate.
