Abstract

In the worldview of the late 13th and early 14th century, in which Dante Alighieri lived, the world was only the Christian land, that is, Europe. It can therefore be said that his idea of the universal empire was connected to the idea of European integration, that is, the idea of Europe. This is why today's European people, who have continued to seek the way to the European Union, are interested in Dante's works. European federalists, including Spinelli, started from a thirst for peace and drew the conclusion that the citizens of European countries would be free and safe when the state of war was finally ended by limiting the sovereignty of European countries. The diagnosis and prescriptions of these European federalists are not very different from Dante's argument that humanity must have a monarchy to reach the highest level, and that monarchy is therefore necessary for the good of the world. Going further, the thesis is extended that peace is necessary for humanity to enjoy political, economic, social and cultural freedom and happiness, and that a world monarchy is necessary to achieve universal peace. The values of freedom and peace of the European federalists are in line with Dante's idea of "humanity living in the supreme state". If we remember that today's European Union was founded by several "fathers of Europe", Dante, who provided them with an ideological and cultural foundation, can be called the "grandfather of Europe".
