Abstract

Purpose: This study aimed to determine psychological distress, fetal attachment, marital intimacy, and quality of life, and identify factors that affect quality of life in pregnant women with preterm labor. Methods: This descriptive correlational study was conducted from November 2020 to August 2023 on 141 women diagnosed with preterm labor at a tertiary hospital in Joenju city. Data were analyzed using the World Health Organization quality-of-life scale; Depression, Anxiety, Stress Scale-21; Fetal Attachment Scale; and Marital Intimacy Scale. Results: Regarding quality of life, the pregnant women with preterm labor were negatively correlated with psychological distress (r=-0.55, p<0.001), positively correlated with marital intimacy (r=0.49, p<0.001), and positively correlated with fetal attachment (r=0.33, p<0.001). Based on the results of multiple regression analysis, psychological distress (β=-0.45, p<0.001) and marital intimacy (β=0.31, p<0.001) significantly impacted quality of life. The explanatory power of this model to elucidate preterm labor women’s quality of life is 44%. Conclusion: As an individual factor, psychological distress had the greatest effect on the quality of life in pregnant women with preterm labor. The second factor was marital intimacy as a partner factor. Therefore, to improve the quality of life of pregnant women during preterm labor, psychological interventions are required to reduce their stress and improve their relationships with their spouses.
