Abstract

This thesis aims to elucidate how the meanings of the mountain have changed in our classical poems. First, the mountain which was recognized as an abode of residence or descent was regarded as a sacred place related to creation, or as an intermediary place which connected the mountain and man. This can be seen in gujibong of garakgugi in which gujiga was inserted as a song. Second, some evidences of ancient people's conception of the mountain can be found in the mountain as setting in geongupsa or in chisulryung, the setting of chisulryunggog. It is difficult to infer particular meaning of the mountain with the exception of the conceptualization of the mountain into a waiting place. However, this can be considered as remaining evidences of mythic thinking in broad sense. And the sache mountain in mulgyejaga almost lost its meaning as a sacred place and played the role as passive and self-consolatory space where they wished that they could calm their despair and disappointment. Third, the blue mountain in cheongsanbyeolgog has various elements contradictory to the general conception of paradise. The blue mountain in cheongsanbyeolgog is merely a simple space conceptually used for the revelation of the narrator's gloomy feeling. However, from later period of Koryeo. The mountain became major materials in literary works for aesthetic object and entered into the dimension of another meaning as the place for the cultivation of character.
