Abstract

In the light of the tone of the poetic narrator and expressive theory, modern Korean poetry in the 1920s is divided into three phases. The first phase is aesthetic sentimentalism, the second decadence of escapism and the third sentimental resistence. “Poetics of Pathos.” in this paper, is a comprehensive concept which includes the above three phases. Etymologically pathos means a misfortune, an agony or a violent emotion and Steiger introduced the term into literature for the first time. Applied this into the poetry, the following reversed value system can be drawn : disconnection with the fossilized tradition, liberation of emotion, individual liberty and self-expression. Ultimately a phase of the modern Korean poetry in the 1920s, not from the negative but from the positive level, became a momentum to take off from the stereotyped habit. This is so called “Poetics of Cathartic Individuality.”
