Abstract
On the Meaning and Etymology of ‘Arirang’·‘Ssǔrirang’ Woo Sil-ha [U Sir-ha] ‘Arirang’ 아리랑 is the most famous folk song of Korea. But the meaning and etymo- logy of ‘Arirang’·‘Ssǔrirang’ 쓰리랑 in the word of this song remain unclear till now. This paper pays attention to ethnic minority Ewenki/Evenki (鄂溫克族) in north-eastern China. They have a language of their own, but don't have a letters of their own. In the language of Chinese ethnic minority Ewenki, ‘Alirang[aliraŋ]’, ‘Serireng[sǝrirǝŋ]’/‘Serereng [sǝrǝrǝŋ]’ and ‘Ari[ari]’ which share similarities with the ‘Arirang’·‘Ssǔrirang’ in the word of Korean ‘Arirang’ song are used till now. North-eastern Chinese ethnic minority Ewenki and Korean have a same origins in various fields. This paper traced the meaning and etymology of ‘Arirang’·‘Ssǔrirang’ on the basis of the similarities with ‘Alirang[aliraŋ]’, ‘Serireng[sǝrirǝŋ]’/‘Serereng [sǝrǝrǝŋ]’ and ‘Ari[ari]’ in Ewnki language. According to the language of Ewenki, ‘Alirang[aliraŋ]’ means ‘① welcome, meet, greet, receive etc., ② endure, put up with, persevere etc.' And ‘Serireng[sǝrirǝŋ]’/‘Serereng [sǝrǝrǝŋ]’ means ‘① awake, wake up, get sober, be aroused, become sensible etc., ② recover consciousness, return to consciousness, recover oneself, come to one's senses, be back to life etc.' Through this study, the author pursues the hypothesis that the etymology of ‘Arirang’·‘Ssǔrirang’ is originated from North-east Shamanism. Namely, ‘Alirang[aliraŋ]’ means ‘welcome/meet/greet/receive the soul/spirit of dead person’. And ‘Serireng[sǝrirǝŋ]’/‘Serereng [sǝrǝrǝŋ]’ means ‘dead person's soul/spirit awake/wake up/get sober/be aroused/become sensible etc.’
