Abstract

Few academic researches have been made into Paek Nak-chun, the founder of solo instrumental music for six-stringed zither, i.e. Kŏmun'go Sanjo; the years of his birth and death are not clear owing to the absence of correct record, let alone the approximate time of his composing Kŏmun'go Sanjo. Gathering informations from various relevant sources like census registers and family members, this treatise focuses on the life of Paek Nak-chun that has been unknown so far: when he was born and dead, where he lived, what relation exists between his engagement in the family occupation and his composing career, when he completed Kŏmun'go Sanjo, and so on. Paek Nak-chun was born in October 2, 1884, at Chŏngsan county, Ch'ŏngyang district South Ch'ungch'ŏng provine. He was the first child of Paek Myŏng-su and Pak Kil-chu. He engaged himself in shaman rituals taking over the family occupation. His experience at the shamanism sceneries helped him compose Kŏmun'go Sanjo in the years between 1914 and 1918. He taught it to An Ki-ok in about 1918, to Kim Chong-gi in about 1924, to Pak Sŏk-ki in about 1925, and to Shin K'wae-dong from 1929 to 1932. It was rare for him to give or take part in any public performances, while he usually stayed in the area of Kanggyŏng. He recorded from November 10th to 13th, 1929, at the Victor Record Company, Japan. The record which has Kŏmun'go Sanjo, Panga t'aryŏng, and New Arirang is left to the present day. He died at 11:00 p.m. on February 23rd, 1933, in 177 Pugongni, Kanggyŏng town, Nonsan city, South Ch'ungch'ŏong province. The cause of his death has not been known.
