Abstract

The Significance of the Concept of Yue/Le(樂) in the "Aesthetic" Aspect of Traditional East Asian Philosophy This paper aims to show that the “aesthetic” aspect of traditional East Asian philosophy can be best understood by exploring the concept of “yue/le.” Traditional East Asian philosophy is often characterized as its “aesthectic” approach to knowledge that refers to the holistic and comprehesive understanding of an object through aesthectic expreience; this approach is cleary contrasted with the “analytic” approach to knowledge, a typical one exercised throughout the history of Western philosophy. “Yue/le” is one of the earliest philosophical notions and has been exerting great influence on shaping the discourse of “aesthetics” in traditional East Asian philosophy. Such being the case, if the notion of “yue/le” is scrutinized, the main characteristics of aesthetic appproach could be understood more deeply. “Yue/le” has two menaings:the one is music, the other enjoyment. The analysis of “yue/le” leads us to realize that the notion of “yue/le” is closely related to the notions of emotion and harmony, the two most important concepts in the traditional East Asian philosophy of art. From this we can safely infer that “yue/le” is a central philosophical concept in traditional East Asian philosophy of art. Given the contemporary scholarly trend that almost exclusively focuses on the Confucian notion of “yue/le,” it seems urgent to fully explore the Daoist notion of “yue/le” for a more balanced and comprehensive understanding of “yue/le.”
