Abstract

This essay attempts to investigate the performance aspect of p'ansori on the basis of source materials of mass-media including radio programs and phonograph records. The following highlights of p'ansori repertory were most frequently broadcasted or recorded. The highlights of Ch'unhyangga 春香歌 included “Path of Paksŏk” (Paksŏkt'i 박석티), “Appearance of the Royal Secret Inspector” (Ŏsa ch'uldo 御使出道), “Song in the Prison” (Okchungga 獄中歌), “Farewell Song” (Ibŏlga 離別歌), while the secens of “following sailers” and “going up the imperial palace” were the most favorite songs of Simch'ŏngga 沈淸歌. “Song of the Gourd” (Pak t'aryŏng 박타령) and “Passing Way of the Swallow” (Chebi nojŏnggi 제비路程記) were the highlights of Hŭngbuga 興夫歌, whereas the highlights of Sugungga 水宮歌 and Chŏkbyŏkka 赤壁歌 were “Song of the Rabbit” (T'okki t'aryŏng 토끼타령) and “Great Battle at the Red Cliff” (Chŏkpyŏk taejŏn 赤璧大戰). After the Liberation, this tradition of p'ansori performance has been continued at the present-day without any historical changes.
