Abstract

This paper examines how Silla adopted foreign music in the 6th and 7th centuries. First it discusses how Silla incorporated Great Kaya 大加耶 music. Then it studies Silla's musical relation with two Chinese Dynasties, Sui 隋 and T'ang 唐. Through the study it turned out that Silla was active in adopting Kaya 加耶 music enough to promote it to Great Music (Taeak 大樂) and acceptas its court music. This could be interpreted as Silla's effort to subdue Kaya's hostile rebels by adopting Kaya's musicians.. It has been widely considered that Silla imported Chinese music in about the mid-7th century. This study finds out, however, that it should be moved back to the late 6th century, based upon the fact that 'Silla music' was categorized as the 'miscellaneous music' as early as the Kai-huang 開皇 era (580~600) of Sui Dyansty. It also presents the newly-known fact that Silla had diplomatic delegation to T'ang China accompanied with beautiful female musicians and made musical exchanges through them. Besides, it examines a line from Samguk sagi ꡔ三國史記ꡕ (History of the Three Kingdoms), which goes that Silla sent 28 persons, including Sŏngch'ŏn 星川 and Kuil 丘日, to the Castle of Ungjin Town, in T'ang's military camp, and had them learn its music and suggests that the number should be corrected to be 38, not 28. It has been generally accepted in the academic world of music that Silla must have imported T'ang's music in 664. Therefore the incorporation of T'ang music has been regarded as a musical characteristic of Unified Silla. However, it comes to a conclusion that there must have been musical exchanges with China before the Unified Silla period (668-935), judging from the fact of musical exchanges with Sui China in the 6th century and the dispatch of female musicians to T'ang China in the early 7th century.
