Abstract

Although Sinawi 시나위 can be referred to as a kind of a musical piece, it is not easy to answer exactly what kind of music it is because the meaning of a word Sinawi and its era as well as a background and a characteristic of Sinawi music possess special character. Shamanic (Kut 굿) music is divided largely into the shamanic song and the shamanic dance. However, all shamanic songs and shamanic dances do not necessary mean that they are Sinawi. For instance, it has been a fact for a long time that when any specific shamanic dance is improvisatory during a performing process of shamanic ritual and a musical performance corresponding to such shamanic dance is also improvisatory, such performing aspect is called Salp'uri or Sinawi and sometimes Hŏt'un karak 허튼가락 literally meaning scattered melody. Namely, improvised humming or gestures of a shaman during a spirit experiencing process are usually occurred, and a dance and music appearing during an accumulating process of such experience could be originating ground of Salp'uri or Sinawi music. Such original form of Salp'uri and Sinawi is called 'Ŏjŏng' 어정 in a shamanic musical term, and people singing Nam-do songs sometimes still distinguish such 'Ŏjŏng' songs in P'ansori. Sinawi is not a musical piece. In addition, it is not music performed originally only with instrumental music without songs or dances. Sinawi and Salp'uri is another name for improvised performance conceived with a spiritual experience of a shaman from shamanic ritual. Therefore, improvisatory cannot be but being the condition of the highest priority for a performing characteristic of Sinawi than anything else. Whether it is a song or a dance, it is difficult to say that such possesses a character of Sinawi or Salp'uri without having improvisatory as a basis. There is an original background of an improvisation giving a birth to an improvisation. The proper function of an improvisation exists in the origin or the suggestion. The original background of shamanic ritual is also based on the same. The history and tradition of shamanic ritual, and its suggestion are sufficient as the original background of giving a birth to Sinawi.
