Abstract
As a guideline for brightness and contrast control after taking pictures, we investigated the effects of brightness and contrast on emotions in black-and-white photographs. We measured JND(Just Noticeable Differences) to decide the change level in brightness and contrast at first. And then, for 88 black-and-white photographs, we made 10 brightness/contrast-changed versions based on JNDs. Observing photographs, 321 people rated their emotions on positivenegative, dynamic-static and light-heavy dimensions with 7-point scales. The results showed that brightness and contrast in black-and-white photographs could affect the feelings based on positive-negative and light-heavy dimensions. It implied that emotional variations in dynamicstatic dimension could be vulnerable to other visual properties
